An Applied Restoration Experience in Ferizler Village

2025, In Ferizler Village of Bergama, an applied restoration project was carried out on a parcel where layers of buildings from different periods coexist, using traditional construction techniques. The project was not only a physical repair, but also created a learning environment based on the revival of local materials and building methods.

During the process, region-specific materials such as stone, wood, and adobe were employed, and additional interventions were designed so as not to disrupt the authentic fabric of the structure. Emphasizing the pedagogical dimension of restoration, architecture students and local craftsmen worked together, allowing traditional techniques to be transmitted through hands-on practice. In this way, both cultural continuity and collective production practices were encouraged.

This experience is considered an important step in preserving Bergama’s multi-layered historical fabric and in making rural cultural heritage more visible. The project carried out in Ferizler demonstrates how local materials, craftsmanship, and participatory restoration processes can be integrated into contemporary conservation approaches.
